Last week, we talked about Moses’ growth through the book of Exodus. What a journey of transformation, evolving from a reluctant, self-doubting fugitive to a confident, compassionate, faithful leader of the Israelites, who meets with God face to face on a regular basis.

We also looked at Exodus 33 and 34 which challenged us to pursue a deep, personal relationship with God.

Do you know Him? Remember Moses’ request of God in 33:13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight.

Let me read from scriptures we’ve covered that highlight God’s character. I am going to be turning pages often, so hang in there.

Exodus 3:14 – “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: “I AM has sent me to you.”’”

What it shows: God’s eternal, self-sufficient nature. It shows His sovereignty, assuring Moses that the supreme authority is before and behind him.

Exodus 6:6-7 – “Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God.’”

What it shows: God’s power and covenant faithfulness. He’s the promise keeper who promises to crush Egypt’s oppression with the plagues and make Israel His own. This shows His commitment to deliver and build a personal relationship with His people.

Exodus 15:11 – “Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?”

What it shows: God’s unmatched holiness and power. Right off Red Sea parting, Israel’s song celebrates God as the one true God, holy and unrivaled, pulling off miracles no one else can touch.

Exodus 16:4 – “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day.’”

What it shows: God’s provision. When the Israelites complain about hunger, God delivers manna like a daily care package, proving He’s attentive and sustains them even when they’re doubting Him.

Exodus 20:2-5 – “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me… for I the LORD your God am a jealous God.”

What it shows: God’s exclusivity and jealousy for loyalty. With the Ten Commandments, He reminds Israel He’s their liberator and expects their full allegiance. He’s not ok with them chasing other gods—His love demands exclusivity.

Exodus 33:11 – “Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.”

What it shows: God’s relational side. This verse captures God’s personal connection with Moses, talking like close friends. It shows He’s not some distant God, but wants real intimacy with His people.

Exodus 34:6-7 – “The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty.’”

What it shows: God’s compassion, mercy, and justice. After the golden calf mess, God lays out His core self to Moses: being patient, overflowing with love, ready to forgive, but firm on accountability.

Applications:

God is Powerful and In Charge.

He Keeps His Promises.

He is Compassionate.

He is Holy.

He is Personal and Relational.

He is the Provider.

He is Jealous for Your Heart.

Personal Challenge:

This is the God that Moses met with so long ago, and He is the same God right now who wants to meet with you, today.

In John 14:1 Jesus says, “Let your hearts not be troubled. Believe in God; Believe also in me.” This week, find a quiet place and take a few minutes, or hours, and ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you.
